Welcome to the Oxfordshire Rural Housing Partnership
Over recent years, housing prices have risen steeply in Oxfordshire and for first time buyers and those on modest incomes, finding affordable housing is a serious problem. The number of former council houses lost through Right To Buy; the increase in homes sold to second home buyers and the ‘buy to let’ market together with the limited number of new homes being built, has exacerbated this situation.
With almost 50% of Oxfordshire’s population living in rural settlements, this shortage of affordable housing is particularly impacting on rural communities. Young people are forced to leave their village environment in order to find a home, often leaving an imbalance in the age structure of small communities. In some villages this has led to the closure of local amenities such as schools, shops and pubs.
“Many of Tackley’s young people have left the village because they are unable to afford local house prices. New affordable homes to rent or part-buy which allow people to remain in the village, have been, and will continue to be, of immense value in maintaining a balanced and vibrant community”
